<p>Surrey&#8217;s Infinity project will go on.</p>
<p>Concord Pacific has entered into an agreement to complete the second phase of the $350-million, five-tower project in the heart of Surrey.</p>
<p>Construction on the second and third Infinity towers was halted in October when Korean company Jung Developments Inc. was forced to seek court protection from creditors after its main financier, American investment bank Lehman Brothers, collapsed.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re certainly delighted to have Concord Pacific finish the project,&#8221; Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said yesterday. &#8220;This announcement reinforces our confidence in the strength of Surrey&#8217;s local economy.&#8221;</p>
<p>The mayor called the Infinity development a &#8220;gateway project&#8221; for the entire city.</p>
<p>&#8220;In terms of Surrey&#8217;s metropolitan core, it&#8217;s a very significant development,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>Details are still being worked out, but under the agreement, Concord Pacific will acquire and complete the second phase of the Infinity towers &#8212; two half-completed, 36-storey towers comprising 698 residential units.</p>
<p>The project&#8217;s first phase, a single 36-storey tower, has already been completed and occupied. It is unclear what will happen to plans for the final two towers, known as the Sky Towers, which were supposed be the tallest buildings between Vancouver and Calgary.</p>
<p>The entire development is planned for three hectares near the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station and Simon Fraser University&#8217;s Surrey campus.</p>
<p>Concord senior vice-president Cliff McCracken said the company hopes to recommence construction on the two towers as soon as possible, removing &#8220;the uncertainty over this project.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It is also our intention to work with the stakeholders and original buyers of this development and help them to complete the purchases of their homes,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>It is unclear how much money Concord Pacific will provide to complete the towers.</p>
<p>Media reports at the time the project was put on hold indicate sales for the two towers were expected to yield about $170 million, including the presale agreements. The cost to complete the project was estimated at less than $100 million.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Certain lines remind me of a Ferrari 456Gt; while the front invokes its big brother Carrera GT. I&#8217;m not sure if I like it. I guess pricing is an issue. Just seems like Porsche has left their soul at the front door and jumped into a lot of criticism. Mind you, their Cayenne seems to be doing very well. If I am going to buy something this expensive, it would have to be love at first site. This isn&#8217;t it. A lot of problems with the car industry are borne within. Once they realize that a certain segment of the population makes their decisions based on design, things will get better. How many people out there are forced to buy something they can afford, rather than what they want. I think the last 10 years has been a brutal period for car design. I blame the German firms, notably BMW. They have come out with some horrid designs. Since Asian car manufacturers copy closely what BMW and Mercedes-Benz put out, the German firms should be coming up with some great designs due to the trickle down effect. I have a great idea for a car company looking to make some money. Hire some designers from Pinifarina and use Japanese engineering. Already sounds like a winner. Cheap and beautiful.</p>
<p>The Porsche family is growing &#8211; in a big way. Today, Porsche officially released information and images about its latest car, the Panamera Gran Turismo. While it isn&#8217;t the first four-door Porsche (that&#8217;d be the Cayenne SUV), the Panamera is officially the first production Porsche sedan.</p>
<p>Styled by Michael Mauer, the Panamera brings in the most notable elements of Porsche&#8217;s hallmark 911 sports car namely it sloped, wedge-like nose and broad shoulders. Whether you&#8217;re a fan of the styling or not, you have to admit that it couldn&#8217;t be mistaken for anything other than a Porsche. Much like the 928 of the &#8217;80s and early &#8217;90s, the Panamera has a fastback-style tailgate which should bode well for cargo capacity.</p>
<p>In terms of size, the Panamera is just 30 millimetres shy of five metres long (that&#8217;s 7-Series-sized) and is a hair wider than the Cayenne SUV. What&#8217;s unusual is that the Panamera&#8217;s overall height is much more in line with the 911, standing at just 1,418 mm tall. Despite the low height, Porsche says that the Panamera was designed to accommodate &#8220;four big adults and their luggage.&#8221;</p>

<p><img style="float:left;margin:0 5px 5px 0;" title="Porsche)" src="http://sneil.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/11/24/panamera_4s_01.jpg" border="0" alt="Porsche)" />For the time being, Porsche says that V6 and V8 engines will be available ranging from 300 to 500 horsepower. If the Cayenne lineup is anything to go by &#8211; and it might, being that it&#8217;s the only other front-engined Porsche currently on sale &#8211; expect a 3.6-litre V6 with direct injection as the base model, a 4.8-litre V8 as a mid-range S, and of course the top of the line Turbo. The Turbo model will come with all wheel drive as standard equipment; it&#8217;ll be an option on the rest of the line. Meanwhile, the Panamera will be offered with a choice between a six-speed manual and Porsche&#8217;s new seven-speed PDK twin-clutch gearbox.</p>
<p>Down the road, one could naturally expect a Turbo S model as a rival to the likes of the Aston Martin Rapide and Lamborghini Estoque. Porsche also has plans for a fuel-efficient Panamera Hybrid. Exact details will follow when the snow melts next spring, but the Hybrid will be based on the V6, and should improve overall fuel economy by about 28-percent.</p>
<p><img style="float:right;margin:0 0 5px 5px;" title="Porsche)" src="http://sneil.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/11/24/panamera_turbo_02.jpg" border="0" alt="Porsche)" />The Panamera should set the bar in handling for the class; after all, if Porsche is capable of making a 5,000 lbs SUV handle the way it can, something with a much lighter curb weight and lower centre of gravity ought to be a walk in the park, especially since the Panamera makes use of lightweight metals like aluminum and magnesium in its construction. Certain publications are reporting that the base Panamera will weigh just 1,600 kg, and the all wheel drive Turbo no more than 2,000 kg.</p>
<p>Porsche has yet to release images of the Panamera&#8217;s interior, but we can tell you that the four-door will be a strict four seater and that each of the seats are heavily sculpted to offer sports car levels of lateral support. And yes, just like the Cayenne, the Panamera will have a key that&#8217;s shaped like the body of the vehicle.</p>

Like all Porsches, carbon-ceramic brakes will be available as an option for the track-bound enthusiast.</p>
<p>Pricing for North America has yet to be announced, but our best guess is that it&#8217;ll check in somewhere north of $100,000 allowing lesser models to compete against the likes of the Jaguar XF, and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, with well-optioned 4S models rivaling more ritzy foe such as Maserati&#8217;s Quattroporte. If money is no object, it&#8217;s doubtable that a $200,000 Panamera Turbo couldn&#8217;t be configured, making it prime game against a Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed and Aston&#8217;s four-door Rapide.</p>
<p>The Panamera will go on sale in North America next autumn, and Porsche hopes to sell 20,000 units of the sedan per year, worldwide.</p></div>

<p>His first Canadian enterprise, Market &#8211; due to open in  January at the Shangri-La Hotel &#8211; is only one of a number of new ventures on the  slate for his Culinary Concepts empire. This month, the 51-year-old chef opened  another Market in Mexico&#8217;s Cabo San Lucas, and earlier this year he opened Spice  Market restaurants in the W Hotels in Atlanta and Istanbul, with a third due in  February in the W Doha.</p>
<p>He has never been to Vancouver before, he admits with a  shrug. Well, that&#8217;s not quite true: He used to land here when he had his Hong  Kong restaurant, Vong. &#8220;Fifteen times, I think,&#8221; he smiles. &#8220;I never got out of  the airport. I had a favourite noodle shop.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nor did he have any idea that his fellow New Yorker,  Daniel Boulud, was expanding into the city until he had signed the contract with  Shangri-La.</p>
<p>Did the Olympics figure into his decision? &#8220;No, no,&#8221; he  insists. &#8220;I actually didn&#8217;t know the Olympics was coming until recently &#8211; after  Beijing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Just as he starts sounding a little too much like Sarah  Palin, he claps his hands together and exclaims: &#8220;Thank God for Obama.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last weekend in New York, following the U.S. election,  his restaurants saw their biggest volume of customers since May. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know  if it was just celebration, or a real sense of hope.&#8221;</p>
<p>Whatever it is, he welcomes it. The economy is a serious  worry and it is no accident that his new restaurants take a less formal &#8211; and  less expensive &#8211; stance than his Michelin-starred New York rooms.</p>
<p>In Vancouver&#8217;s saturated restaurant market, it&#8217;s hard  not to see the arrival of two celebrity chefs as something of a showdown. They  are friends, and Mr. Vongerichten is coming for the opening of Mr. Boulud&#8217;s DB  Bistro Moderne and revamped Lumière in December. But business is business.</p>
<p>&#8220;The question is, who will be more successful?&#8221; says  Alan Richman, food and wine critic for GQ magazine. &#8220;Daniel&#8217;s food appears  simpler, but I have never seen anyone take basic, farmhouse-style French food  and elevate it to haute cuisine better than he does.&#8221;</p>
<p>On the other hand, he says, &#8220;Jean-Georges is a more  complex culinary animal &#8211; you could argue that he is the most creative and  successful chef ever to work in America.&#8221;</p>
<p>For Mr. Boulud, speaking by phone from New York, the  difference will be evident. &#8220;We are not going into a hotel,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Lumière  is independent and we are creating a local restaurant. Of course,&#8221; he adds,  laughing, &#8220;Jean-Georges gets to come check us out first &#8211; so he has an  advantage.&#8221;</p>
<p>Born into a coal-mining family in Alsace, France, Mr.  Vongerichten walked away from the family business after his 16th birthday, when  his parents took him to the late Paul Haeberlin&#8217;s three-Michelin starred Auberge  de L&#8217;Ill.</p>
<p>He apprenticed under Mr. Haeberlin, then the feted Paul  Bocuse before moving to Bangkok&#8217;s Mandarin Oriental hotel.</p>
<p>He arrived in New York in the mid-1980s via Singapore,  Hong Kong and Japan, with a classical French menu to deliver daily at Park  Avenue&#8217;s Drake Hotel. But Asia had colonized his taste buds, and in just a year  he became a pioneer of east-west fusion. Cooking hasn&#8217;t been the same since.</p>
<p>But that was more than two decades ago, and these days  fusion is not just a global trend &#8211; in Vancouver, it&#8217;s an institution. Here, soy  sauce is as commonplace as sea salt &#8211; and there are plenty of chefs who work  with both traditions. &#8220;I know, it&#8217;s another challenge,&#8221; he nods. &#8220;But it&#8217;s not  just about putting ginger in a dish.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. His restaurants may dot the globe, but look  closely at each menu and you see the same dishes appear in New York, Shanghai,  Paris, London. There may be a different emphasis and a recognition of local  ingredients, but it is very clear that this is a centralized organization, not a  franchise.</p>
<p>Controlling his brand is important to him, and he is  known to bristle at criticism. Earlier this year, he used his blog to respond to  New York magazine&#8217;s negative review of his new Japanese soba spot, Matsugen,  suggesting its author Adam Platt didn&#8217;t understand the food.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yes, I am sensitive,&#8221; he says. &#8220;And when you expose  yourself, you have to take the good, the bad and the ugly &#8211; but the day I stop  caring, I retire.&#8221;</p>
<p>One thing he says he&#8217;s learned from nearly three decades  of working within hotels is that the food must take precedence over the chef. He  does not employ chefs in his satellite restaurants for their invention, but for  their skill and ability to execute his vision. &#8220;Often in hotels, if you have a  chef with his own vision and then he leaves, the customers leave with him,&#8221; he  says. &#8220;With us, if the chef moves on, the menu remains the same.&#8221;</p>
<p>This is key, Mr. Richman suggests. &#8220;Which concept do you  believe in? Do you want to eat food &#8211; still good &#8211; but at 75 per cent of what it  would be if the celebrated chef was in the kitchen, or food that is 100 per cent  the vision of someone you have never heard of? Personally, I am a fan of the  emerging rock chef point of view.&#8221;</p>
<p>For Mr. Vongerichten, that&#8217;s an outdated model. &#8220;To  receive 100 per cent of any chef, they would have to cook everything, serve  everything. &#8230; Once you open a restaurant, you have to depend on your team on  every level.&#8221; His own team is huge &#8211; more than 900 employees in New York alone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Once you accept that you can&#8217;t do everything yourself,&#8221;  he smiles, &#8220;then everything becomes much easier.&#8221;</p>
